Description

The Hollis Ringed Swag Chandelier hangs a cluster of small pendant drops from chains that swag outward across the ceiling before falling — each drop shaped like a smooth capsule with a flat disc encircling its waist, the way a ring circles a planet. The ring is not decoration. It catches the upward spill from the bulb and throws it back down, so each drop reads as a small bright halo rather than a bare point of light.

What makes a swag chandelier different from every other fixture is that you decide the shape. A standard chandelier arrives with its geometry already fixed; this one arrives as a set of drops and a set of chains, and the curve of each swag depends on where you put the ceiling hooks. Pull them wide and the drops scatter across a whole ceiling like a constellation. Bring them close and they gather into a tight cluster over a table.

This is not one fixture with arms. Each drop mounts on its own round canopy, screwed to the ceiling wherever you decide, with the chain draping from one to the next.

So the spacing is yours. Set them 12″ apart for a tight cluster over a table, or spread them three feet apart to run the length of an island. Line them up straight, stagger them, or scatter them across a ceiling — the fixture does not have an opinion.

The chain is made of individual links, so every drop shortens on its own by removing links — independently of the others. Nothing is fixed at a single length.

That is what lets you stagger the heights, which is the difference between a group of lights that looks arranged and a row that looks like it was hung in a hurry. Over a table you might drop them evenly; across an open ceiling, varying them by 4–8″ at a time gives the cluster depth. Every fixture ships with 150 cm / 59″ per drop to work with.

Natural stone varies from piece to piece

Alabaster is a natural stone, so every ring carries its own veining and subtle colour variation. The piece you receive will differ slightly from the photos — this is inherent to real stone, not a defect. Across a fixture with several drops, the rings will not match each other exactly either.

About dimming

The LED is integrated, so dimming works through a compatible LED wall dimmer rather than by changing bulbs — there is no bulb to swap. Contact us before ordering and we'll confirm compatibility with your dimmer.

Choosing a Count

Work backwards from the surface underneath. Roughly one drop per foot of table or island length gives an even rhythm without crowding — a 5 ft island takes five, an 8 ft table takes seven to nine. In an open room with nothing beneath it, choose by how much ceiling you want the fixture to occupy rather than by room size.

Two things worth knowing before you order. First, leave 12–18″ between drops; closer than that and they merge into one mass rather than reading as separate points. Second, stagger the lengths — drops hung level look like an accident, drops at varied heights look like a decision. The spread figures above are planning guidance rather than fixed measurements, because on a swag fixture you are the one setting the shape.

How to read the last column. "Ceiling spread" is how much ceiling the canopies will occupy end to end, not the size of the fixture — on a swag light there is no fixed overall dimension, because you place the canopies yourself. Every figure here assumes 12–18″ between drops, which is the spacing at which they read as separate points rather than one mass. Pull them wider and the same count covers more ceiling.

Only the drop size is a specification. Table sizes, ceiling heights and spreads above are planning guidance based on how these fixtures are normally hung. The Only Fixture You Get to Draw

A stone ring around every drop, chains that go where you put them, and a shape decided in your room rather than in a factory.

You Decide the Shape, Not the Factory

Every other chandelier arrives with its geometry already fixed — you hang it, and it is what it is. This one arrives as drops and chains, and the shape is set by where you place the ceiling hooks. Pull them wide and the drops scatter across the ceiling like a constellation; bring them in and they gather over a table. The same product can span ten feet or cluster into three, which is why it fits rooms that defeat a conventional fixture — a beam in the wrong place, a junction box nowhere near the table, a ceiling that needs filling rather than a point that needs lighting.

The Stone Ring Is Doing a Job

That flat disc around each drop is not trim. A bare pendant sends roughly half its output sideways and upward, where it does nothing but create glare in your eyeline. The ring catches that spill and turns it back down, so the light lands where you need it — and because the ring is alabaster rather than metal, it does not bounce the light back as a hard reflection. The stone glows from the edge, giving each drop a soft halo instead of a bright rim.

Ten Counts, One Drop

From a single pendant to thirteen, every configuration uses the identical drop — so a bedside light and a hotel lobby installation share exactly the same detail. Choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, or 13 lights, and add the rest later if the room changes. The 150 cm / 59″ of cord and chain shortens on site, so every drop hangs at the height you set rather than the one you were given.

Real Alabaster, Real Chain

The rings are cut and polished from genuine natural alabaster. Light travels a short way into the stone before it comes back out, which is why the edge glows softly instead of throwing a hard line — and it is why no two rings on your fixture will share the same veining. Stone also holds its colour: it will not yellow near a warm LED the way an acrylic disc does. The suspension is welded metal chain, not fabric cord — cord sags into a soft curve and stretches over years, while chain holds the exact line you set on installation day and carries the weight of a swag without creeping. The metal is electroplated and polished, a finish that wears rather than flakes.

Common Questions

How a swag light hangs, what to do about a sloped ceiling, and how many drops you actually need.

How does a swag chandelier actually hang?

Differently from a normal chandelier, and this is the whole point of it.

The wiring comes out of the electrical box in your ceiling as usual. But instead of the light hanging straight down from there, the chain runs sideways across the ceiling to hooks that you screw in wherever you want, and the drops hang down from those hooks.

So you are drilling more than one hole — the box, plus one hook per drop. In exchange, you decide where every light ends up instead of being stuck with whatever spot the builder wired.

Can I hang it on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?

Yes, and it handles a slope better than most fixtures do. Chains hang straight down whatever angle the ceiling is, so every drop will sit perfectly upright. A fixture on a rigid rod would lean over; this one cannot.

Two things to sort out. First, the round cover plate at the ceiling — the piece that hides the wiring — is made to sit flat, so on a slope it leaves a gap on the high side. A sloped ceiling adapter fixes it: a small angled plate that goes behind the cover. Any electrician knows the part and most hardware stores stock it. Tell us your ceiling angle when you order and we will confirm what you need.

Second, remember the drops will hang at different distances from the floor if the hooks are at different heights on the slope. That can look wonderful — or accidental. Decide which you want before you drill, and measure each drop from the floor rather than from the ceiling.

My ceiling wire isn't above my table. Can I still use this?

Yes — this is exactly the problem a swag light solves, and it is why people buy them.

If your electrical box sits in the middle of the room but your table is off to one side, a normal chandelier leaves you with a light that hangs in the wrong place. Here you keep the wiring where it is and swag the chain across to hooks above the table. No rewiring, no electrician cutting into your ceiling, no patching and repainting.

The same applies if a beam, a vent, or a skylight sits where you would rather have the light.

How many drops do I need?

A simple rule: about one drop per foot of table or island length. A 5 ft island takes five, an 8 ft table takes seven to nine. For an open room with nothing underneath, pick by how much of the ceiling you want the fixture to cover.

Then leave 12–18″ between the drops. Closer than that and they blur into one mass instead of reading as separate lights.

Is the ring really stone?

Yes. Every ring is cut and polished from genuine natural alabaster — not resin, not acrylic, not plastic made to look like stone.

You can tell when it arrives: real stone is cool to the touch and heavier than it looks, and every ring carries its own faint veining. On a fixture with several drops the rings will not match each other exactly. That is what real stone does, not a fault.

What is the ring for? Is it just decoration?

A bare pendant throws a lot of its light sideways and upward, where it does nothing except shine in your eyes. The ring catches that light and sends it back down onto the table. And because it is stone rather than metal, it does not reflect as a hard bright edge — the stone itself glows softly, so each drop reads as a small halo instead of a glare spot.

Can I dim it?

Yes, with a dimmer switch made for LED. The LED is built into the fixture, so there is no bulb to swap for a dimmable one — the dimming happens at the wall switch instead. Not every dimmer works with every LED, so tell us which dimmer you have before you order and we will confirm it is a match.

Can I put it in a bathroom or outside?

No. This is rated IP20, which means indoor dry rooms only — no protection against water at all, not even steam.

Dining room, kitchen, entry, bedroom, stairwell: all fine. Not a bathroom, not above a bath or shower, not a laundry, and not a porch or balcony even with a roof over it. Alabaster is also porous, so damp is bad for the stone as well as the wiring.

Will my ceiling hold the hooks?

This matters more here than on a normal chandelier, because you are putting weight on points you chose yourself rather than on a box the builder installed.

Every hook needs to go into a joist or a proper anchor rated for the weight — never straight into bare plasterboard, which will pull out. Stone drops are heavier than they look. Mark all your hook positions first, check what is behind each one, and only then start drilling.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off, let it cool, then wipe each ring and drop with a soft dry cloth. Keep water off the stone — alabaster is porous and absorbs it, which leaves a mark you cannot buff out. No sprays, no solvents, no scouring pads. Twice a year is plenty.

What if one drop gets damaged?

That drop comes off on its own. Each one hangs from its own hook and its own chain, so a single damaged piece never means sending the whole fixture back.

If anything arrives damaged, send us photos within 24 hours of delivery and we will replace it. After that we keep spares — just tell us your finish and how many drops you have.
