The story

Trottola, spinning tops of stone

On the old stone streets of Italian towns, children once spun wooden tops and watched them wobble to a stop, each one a small, perfect shape standing still.

Trottola, the Italian word for spinning top, gathers those shapes and stacks them in light. Rounded tiers of natural white alabaster, each swelling out and tapering in like a turned top, are stacked one above another on a slender rod. Switch it on and a warm 3000K LED lights every tier from within: the narrow waists between them shine brightest, and the stone reveals its own soft, cloud-like veining.

Hang one over a bedside or in an entry, a row of three over a kitchen island, or a cluster of different heights in a stairwell. In gold or black, the Trottola suits modern organic, Japandi, wabi-sabi, Mediterranean and quiet-luxury interiors.

Before you order

The stone and the light

Is it real alabaster?

Yes. Every tier is natural white alabaster, not resin or glass, so its veining varies from tier to tier and shows most clearly when the light is on.

What kind of light does it give?

A warm white 3000K glow from a built-in LED, softened by the stone. The narrow waists between the tiers shine brightest. There are no bulbs to buy or replace.

Can I choose the veining?

Yes. We can select alabaster with a particular look, from creamy and plain to bold, cloud-like veining. Please contact us before ordering.

Is it dimmable?

The standard Trottola is on/off only. A dimmable version is available on request: please contact us before ordering.

Size and placement

Which height should I choose?

All sizes are 15 cm (5.9″) wide. The 2-tier (28 cm) suits bedsides and small entries; the 3-tier (43 cm) suits kitchen islands; the 4-tier (54 cm) suits dining tables and tall rooms; the 5-tier (65 cm) suits stairwells and double-height spaces.

Can I hang several together?

Yes. A row of two or three over a kitchen island, or a cluster of different heights in a stairwell, looks beautiful. Over an island, space them about 60–75 cm (24–30″) apart.

How high should it hang?

Over a table or island, keep the lowest tier about 75–90 cm (30–36″) above the surface. Where people walk below, keep at least 2.1 m (7 ft) of clearance.

How long is the rod?

Each pendant comes with 100 cm (39.4″) of rod in three pieces: 50 cm, 30 cm and 20 cm (19.7″, 11.8″ and 7.9″). Combine them for a drop of 20, 30, 50, 70, 80 or 100 cm. Longer rods are made on request: please contact us.

Can it be installed on a sloped ceiling?

Yes. We can make a custom canopy for pitched or vaulted ceilings so the pendant hangs straight. Send us the slope angle before ordering.

Installation and care

How is it installed?

It is a hardwired ceiling pendant on a rod. For safety, we recommend installation by a qualified electrician, following local electrical codes.

How do I clean it?

Switch off, then dust the stone with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and chemical cleaners, as alabaster is a porous natural stone.

How soon will my order ship?

Each pendant is prepared at our factory in 5–10 days, then dispatched to you. You will see the delivery estimate for your country at checkout.

Most shades block light and let it out at the edges. Yet, this stone-textured lampshade manages to achieve exactly that.

Translucent properties

Alabaster is translucent. Switch it on and the whole shade lights up from within, veining and all, instead of glowing only where the bulb sits. There is no bright spot to look at, because the light source is the entire surface.

Naturally formed

The veining was decided underground, long before anyone cut it. Every shade carries its own pattern and its own faint colour shift — so the piece that arrives is not the piece in the photograph, and that is the point.

Durable and long-lasting

Resin and acrylic imitations go amber and brittle within a few years of sitting next to a warm bulb. Stone does not age that way. The shade you unpack is the shade you will have in twenty years.

Light Color Defines the Look

Use warm white (2700K). The stone itself has an off-white, creamy tone; cool light passing through it makes it look grayish and dingy, whereas warm light brings out that honey-like hue seen in the photos.

Clean Only with a Dry Cloth

Alabaster is a natural stone that absorbs water and cleaning agents, which can leave permanent stains. Disconnect the power, let the bulb cool down, and then wipe the fixture with a soft, dry cloth—do not use water or spray cleaners.

It is heavier than it looks.

The density of the stone is far greater than that of a glass shade of the same size; ensure the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is sufficient for safety.

Industrially Replicated Surface

Limitations of resin

Resin is cast in moulds, so the "veining" repeats from one shade to the next and the light passes through evenly with no depth to it. It also ages differently: sitting close to a warm bulb, resin tends to amber and grow brittle within a few years.

You can feel its weight when you hold it in your hand; it doesn't feel light and flimsy like plastic. The edges are finished perfectly smooth, with no rough spots or burrs.

Looks beautiful, arrived with faulty LED driver

Looks beautiful, but arrived with a faulty LED driver and burnt out the LED string light. Basically broke within minutes of it being wired in. Luckily I found a local lighting company who had a similar LED driver and was able to replace the LED lights. It’s a very custom lighting system that you can not easily replace. Buyer beware of that.

Exceptional visual quality.

Honestly, the final look completely won me over! Each hook is designed in a reasonable way, so that the glass tubes hang naturally in a staggered manner, without the rigid feel of an industrial mold. I am very satisfied with this light fixture.

I ditched my table lamps and installed these on either side of the bed for reading and ambiance. Not only did it free up space on my nightstands, but it also gives the entire room a clean, sophisticated, and high-end look. The lighting was just right, soft and gentle. I love it!
