How Long Should a Linear Light Be? The Rule, and the Arithmetic
Most linear fixtures that look wrong in a room are not the wrong style. They are the wrong length — and it is the one thing you cannot fix after installation.
A linear light is the easiest fixture in the house to get right and the easiest to get wrong, for the same reason: it has a length, and the room has a length, and the two have to agree. A round chandelier that is slightly too small looks modest. A linear fixture that is slightly too short looks like a mistake, because there is a table underneath it drawing a straight line for comparison.

The rule, in one sentence
A linear fixture should be roughly half to two-thirds the length of the table or island beneath it — and never wider than the surface itself.
Two-thirds is the upper limit, not a target. Above that the fixture starts to read as a ceiling feature rather than as a light over a table, and the ends creep toward the edge of the surface where people sit.
Half is the lower limit for a reason as well. Under half, the fixture stops looking deliberate and starts looking like a light that happened to be hung there — the effect people describe as "it looks lost". On a long table that is a much more common error than going too big.

Measure the table or island first. Not the room — the surface. Then read across.

If your table falls between two rows, size to the longer one. A fixture reads short far more readily than it reads long.
Width matters more than people expect
The length gets all the attention, but the width is what people actually notice from a seat. A linear fixture should sit comfortably inside the width of the table — as a guide, no more than about a third of it. On a standard 36″ to 42″ dining table that means a fixture body under roughly 12″ wide. Wider than that and it starts to feel low over the plates even at the right height.

Height: the numbers, and the one exception
The standard is straightforward and worth committing to memory.

The exception is a table people talk across. If the room is used for long dinners, hang toward the lower end — 30″ rather than 36″. It sounds counterintuitive, but a lower fixture puts the light on the table and keeps the sightline across it clear above the shade, whereas a higher one puts the fixture itself directly in the line of sight between two people opposite each other.

One linear fixture, or two pendants?
This is the decision most people are actually making, and the answer is not aesthetic.
Choose a linear fixture when
The surface is long and narrow — a rectangular table, an island, a bar. A linear light distributes along the length rather than pooling in one place, which is why a single one covers an eight-foot table that would need three pendants. It is also one junction box instead of three, which matters if the wiring is already in and you would rather not open the ceiling.
Choose pendants when
You want the ceiling to feel less busy, or the island is very long and a single fixture would need to be so big it dominates. Pendants also let you dodge an obstacle — a beam, a sprinkler head, a badly placed junction box — because you can space them around it. A linear fixture cannot.
Long and narrow, one box, want the light spread evenly → linear. Very long, obstacles in the ceiling, or you want less mass overhead → pendants.

Liora Beaded Alabaster Swag Chandelier
A swag hangs in a curve rather than a straight bar, which does something a rigid fixture cannot: it fills vertical space as well as horizontal. In a room with height to spare, a straight linear light can look thin; a swag reads as a piece of the room rather than a line drawn under the ceiling. Alabaster beads mean the light comes through the stone rather than out of a visible lamp.

The most reduced of the six: a single beam of travertine with no ornament on it at all. Travertine reads as texture rather than as pattern — open, matte and stone-coloured — so it adds material without adding decoration. The one to choose when the room already has plenty going on and the light should not compete.

Endless Pendant Light
A continuous loop rather than a straight run, so it works where a rigid line would look severe — a round table it can hover over, or an island where you want a form rather than a beam. It also reads differently from every side, which a straight linear fixture never does.

Perrin Threaded Orb Linear Chandelier
Orbs threaded along a linear frame — so instead of one continuous strip you get a rhythm of separate light sources down the table. Each orb lights the place beneath it, which is why this suits a long dining table better than a bar: it gives every seat its own light rather than a single wash across all of them.

Linear Marble Rectangular Wall Lamp
Linear thinking applied to a wall. A long horizontal fixture widens a wall visually the way a straight run widens a ceiling — useful above a console, a headboard or a stretch of corridor where a round sconce would look like a full stop. Marble gives it weight without colour.

Long Strip Travertine Prometheus Wall Lamp
The same idea turned upright. A long vertical strip suits a tall narrow wall — a stair, a panel beside a door, a double-height entry — where a compact sconce looks stranded. As a guide, a wall light reads well at roughly a quarter to a third of the height of the wall it sits on.

A short note on the materials
Three of the six are stone, and stone behaves differently from glass in ways worth knowing before you choose.
Alabaster is translucent. Light travels through the body of the stone rather than escaping at its edges, which is why an alabaster fixture has no bright point anywhere on it. It is also porous — a dry cloth only, never anything damp, because water and sprays soak in and leave marks that do not come out.
Travertine is not translucent in the same way. It reads as surface and texture rather than as glow, and its light comes from the openings in the fixture rather than through the material. It is porous too, and it holds its colour better than most stone under warm light.
Marble is the heaviest and the least translucent of the three. Choose it when you want the material to be present rather than lit — it brings weight and a cool tone, which is why it works on a wall where a warm stone would be too soft.
All three want a 2700K warm white lamp. A cool or daylight bulb behind pale stone reads grey, which is the most common reason a stone fixture looks different at home from how it looked online.

On the table, always. If the table is off-centre in the room, the fixture goes off-centre with it. A fixture aligned to the room and a table aligned to the seating is the error you notice every single day.
Over a long narrow surface, usually — it spreads light along the length rather than pooling, and it needs one junction box rather than several. Pendants win when the ceiling has obstacles to dodge, or when a single fixture would have to be so large it dominates the room.
Often, yes. Linear fixtures are heavier than they look and hang from one or two points. Ask for the weight before ordering and give it to your electrician — a brace fitted before the fixture arrives is trivial; one fitted afterwards means taking everything down again.
