Three numbers worth knowing
Measure once and every light you choose will look like it was made for the room.
Room length + width
Add your room’s length and width in feet. That number, in inches, is a good diameter for the main ceiling light. A 12 by 14 foot room suits a fixture around 26 inches wide.
Above a table or island
Measure from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture. In open walkways, keep at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor.
Warm white for home
Warm white flatters stone, wood and skin tones. Save cooler 4000K light for work areas like a garage or laundry room.
Over a marble kitchen islandThe kitchen island
The island is where the light has to do two jobs: bright enough to cook by, warm enough to linger under. A linear row of pendants or a draped chandelier frames the island and turns it into the centrepiece of the room.
- Spacing: leave roughly 24 to 30 inches between pendants, and about 6 inches in from each end of the island.
- Height: hang the bottom of the light 30 to 36 inches above the countertop.
- Width: keep the fixture about 12 inches shorter than the island on each side.

Over a formal dining tableThe dining room
A dining room light sets the mood for every meal. Choose one statement chandelier or a cluster of pendants centred over the table, then add a soft lamp or sconce at the edge of the room.
- Size: choose a chandelier roughly half to two thirds the width of your table.
- Height: 30 to 36 inches from tabletop to the bottom of the fixture, a little higher for tall ceilings.

The best living rooms use three layers of light: one centrepiece overhead, wall sconces for warmth at eye level, and a floor or table lamp by the sofa for reading.
- Size rule: add the room’s length and width in feet. The total, in inches, is a good fixture diameter.
- Layers: pair a ceiling light with sconces at about 60 to 66 inches from the floor.
- Corners: a floor lamp in a dark corner makes the whole room feel bigger.

- Fan size: about 44 to 50 inches for rooms up to 12 by 12 feet, 52 inches and up for larger rooms.
