The picture light, reconsidered
Arden Picture Light Wall Sconce
The Arden Picture Light Wall Sconce is a brass picture light with a slim beveled hood and a white glass diffuser, made to lay a soft, even wash of light over paintings, prints, mirrors, and shelves.
What a picture light changes
The same painting, the same evening. The only difference is where the light comes from.
About the Arden
Brass, white glass, and a clean architectural line.
Most rooms light everything a little and nothing well. The Arden does the opposite: it gives one wall a clear purpose. Its long brass hood reaches out on a squared arm and turns downward, so light lands on the canvas instead of spilling into the room.
Under the hood, a white glass diffuser softens the light from two E26 or E27 bulbs into a single, even band. That means no bright stripe across the top of the frame and no dark corners at the bottom, only a calm, gallery-style glow that lets color and texture show.
The design is deliberately quiet. Beveled hood ends, a slim 4.7" profile, and a rectangular backplate keep the fixture from competing with the art beneath it, whether that is an oil landscape, a black-and-white photograph, a vintage map, or the vanity mirror you use every morning.
ADJUSTABLE
Up-and-down adjustable brass hinge
Tilt it. Aim it. Light it right.
Most picture lights are fixed: whatever angle they arrive at is the angle you live with. The Arden has an adjustable brass hinge between the arm and the hood that tilts the hood up and down, so you aim the light exactly where your art needs it, and it holds that angle firmly.
Choose your finish
Match the frame first, then the room.

Gold
The traditional gallery finish. Gold echoes gilded and wood frames and adds warmth to oil paintings, portraits, and landscapes, especially in rooms with walnut, leather, or marble.

Black
A crisp, graphic line that disappears against dark frames and stands out on white walls. It suits abstract art, photography, and black-framed prints in modern and minimalist rooms.

Nickel
Bright and reflective, Nickel keeps a room feeling light and clean. It is a natural choice above a bathroom mirror and beside chrome taps, silver frames, and cool-toned art.

Buying a pair?
Select the size marked (*2): two together come at a better price than buying them separately. Ideal for a pair of paintings, both sides of a doorway, or matching bedside walls.
Real brass, real photos
Photographed on our workbench before packing, with no retouching, so you can see exactly what the brass looks like up close.
Brass naturally resists rust and corrosion, so the hood and arm keep their clean lines and finish year after year.
Brass machines cleanly, which is how the Arden gets its sharp beveled hood ends and squared arm.
Denser than aluminum, brass gives the Arden a reassuring heft that keeps the hood steady at the angle you set.
A smooth brass surface takes Gold, Black, and Nickel finishes evenly, with no pitting or rough spots.
Light your art like a curator
Three steps to get a gallery result at home.
-
Measure the frame
Pick a light about one half to two thirds the width of the frame: the 11.8" Arden for pieces around 18–24" wide, the 29.9" Arden for pieces around 45–60" wide.
-
Set the height
Mount it so the hood sits about 3–6" above the top of the frame. Over a vanity mirror, aim for about 75–80" from the floor; over a headboard, about 20–30" above the mattress.
-
Choose the bulbs
Bulbs are not included, so you can pick exactly the light you want. We recommend two warm white LED bulbs (E26 or E27) at 2700K–3000K with CRI 90 or higher: they show true color, run cool, and give off almost no UV, which is kinder to paintings and prints.
"Every wall has one piece worth lighting."The design story
Long before track lights and spotlights, collectors lit their paintings one at a time. In country-house libraries and early galleries, a small metal hood above each frame marked the pieces worth stopping for, and after dark those lit canvases became the brightest, most alive things in the room.
The Arden design borrows that habit and edits it down to its essentials: a slim hood with beveled ends, a squared arm, and a plain rectangular backplate. It is formal enough for an oil portrait and restrained enough for a modern photograph, because the point was never the light itself. The point is what it shows you.
Hang it over the painting you saved for, the map from a trip that mattered, or the mirror you meet every morning, and let one wall in the house say: look here.
Picture light questions, answered

Choosing and placing
What size picture light do I need?
A picture light should span about one half to two thirds of the frame's width. The 11.8" single-arm Arden suits artwork and mirrors about 18–24" wide, while the 29.9" double-arm Arden suits canvases about 45–60" wide. If your piece falls between sizes, the longer light usually gives the more even result.
How far above the frame should it be mounted?
Position the backplate so the hood sits about 3–6" above the top of the frame. From there, use the swivel hinge to tilt the hood until the light reaches the bottom of the artwork without glare on the surface.
Can I angle the light?
Yes. A brass hinge between the arm and the hood lets you tilt the light up or down and holds it at the angle you set. This makes it easy to light tall canvases, deep frames, or glass-covered prints without shadows or reflections.
Can I use it over a bathroom mirror?
Yes. Center it above the mirror at about 75–80" from the floor so light falls evenly on your face. The Arden is rated IP20 for indoor dry locations, so install it away from showers, tubs, and direct splashing.
Does it work over a bed or bookshelf?
It does. The 29.9" double-arm version works well about 20–30" above a headboard as a reading and wall light, or along the top of a bookshelf to highlight books and objects.
Bulbs and light
Are bulbs included?
No, bulbs are not included, so you can choose the brightness and color you prefer. The Arden takes two standard E26 or E27 bulbs, up to 40W in total.
Which bulbs work best for artwork?
We recommend warm white LED bulbs at 2700K–3000K with a color rendering index (CRI) of 90 or higher. They show colors accurately, flatter wood and gilded frames, and run cool on the wall.
Is the Arden dimmable?
Bulbs and dimmer switches are not included with the Arden. If you want dimmable light, buy dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer switch yourself, or email support@vidirlighting.com and our team will help you choose the right setup.
Will the light damage my painting?
LED bulbs give off very little heat and almost no UV, which makes them the gentlest option for paintings, prints, and photographs. For valuable or antique pieces, switch the light off when the room is not in use.
Materials, order and care
What is the Arden made of?
The hood, swivel hinge, arm, and backplate are brass, finished in Gold, Black, or Nickel. A white glass diffuser under the hood softens the light and hides the bulbs from view.
Does it work with US power, and how is it installed?
Yes. It is rated AC 110–240V, so it works with standard 120V US household power. For safety and a clean finish on the wall, we recommend installation by a licensed electrician.
How long until my order ships?
Each Arden is prepared at our own factory and ships within 5–10 days of your order. You will receive a tracking number by email as soon as it is on its way.
How do I care for the finish?
Switch the light off and let the bulbs cool, then wipe the hood and arm with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemical cleaners, which can dull the finish over time.

Quality you can feel
A brass body gives your lamp a reassuring weight, lasting strength and a finish that stays beautiful in everyday use.
Why We Choose Brass
The metal inside a lamp decides how long it lasts and how it looks up close. We choose brass for its strength, its natural resistance to rust and the refined finish it brings to every detail.
-
Built to carry weight
Multi-tier chandeliers depend on a strong frame, canopy and chain. Brass is dense and rigid, so every tier hangs securely and stays level.
-
Refined up close
Brushed brass details look crisp and feel substantial in the hand, and standard E12 sockets make changing bulbs simple.
-
Beautiful in any finish
Brass takes finishes well. Whether left golden or finished in matte black, the frame keeps its rings and tiers precisely in shape.
Brass vs. Other Lamp Metals
Many lamps use cheaper metals that look similar at first glance. Here is how brass compares with the materials most commonly used in lighting.
| Property | Brass | Iron | Aluminum | Zinc alloy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rust resistance | Does not rust; may develop a soft patina | Rusts if the coating is scratched or worn | Does not rust, but can dull over time | Can corrode in damp conditions |
| Strength | Dense and strong, holds its shape | Strong, but heavy | Lightweight, dents more easily | More brittle, can crack under stress |
| Finish and look | Warm golden tone that polishes beautifully | Needs paint or plating to look finished | Cool tone, usually painted or anodized | Often plated to imitate brass |
| Detail | Machines cleanly for crisp, precise details | Harder to shape into fine details | Good for simple shapes | Cast shapes can look less crisp |
General material properties for reference. Actual performance also depends on thickness, finish and design.
Made to last, not to replace
Brass does not rust and holds its form over time, so your lighting keeps its strength and good looks for years to come.
