Named after a set of bells

A carillon is a set of bells, played together

High in the towers of old European towns hang the carillons: bells of different voices on iron chains, played together until the whole square fills with sound.

The Carillon alabaster pendant brings that picture indoors. Instead of bronze bells that ring, it hangs bells carved from natural alabaster that glow. Each rounded shade hangs from a turned finial and a hand-linked chain, and between the ceiling canopies the chain falls in loose, graceful swags, so the light reads as a sculpture even before it is switched on.

Switch it on and the stone warms from within, revealing soft grey and honey veining and a gentle, candle-like glow. Start with a single bell over a sink or a bedside, or gather three, five or thirteen bells at staggered heights above a dining table, a kitchen island or a tall stairwell. In black or gold, the Carillon suits modern farmhouse, French country, old-world European, Japandi and modern classic interiors.

Natural Alabaster

Naturally unique veining

No two bells are ever the same

Every shade is cut from natural alabaster, so each bell carries its own veining and subtle variation in colour. In a cluster, these small differences are what make the light feel alive, and your Carillon truly one of a kind.

A natural mark of real stone, not a quality defect.

01 · Spacing

Every bell has its own canopy

30–90 cm 12″ – 3 ft between bells

Each pendant mounts to its own round canopy, and the decorative chain swags from one canopy to the next. There is no shared bar, so the spacing is simply where you place each canopy: about 30 cm for a close cluster over a table, about 90 cm to run the length of a kitchen island. Plan the positions with your electrician before installation.

02 · Height

Every chain shortens on its own

150 cm 59.1″ of chain per bell

Each bell hangs on up to 150 cm of chain made of individual links. Remove links to shorten one bell at a time, without touching the others. Set neighbouring bells 10–20 cm (4–8″) apart in height for a gentle cascade, or keep them level for a calm line.

Three ways to hang it

  • In a line

Every bell at one height, evenly spaced. Calm and architectural over a kitchen island.

  • Staggered

Alternate heights 10–20 cm apart. The classic cascade over a dining table.

  • Scattered

Uneven spacing and heights across the ceiling. Sculptural in stairwells and open rooms.

Questions, answered

About the stone, the light and your order

The stone

Are the shades real alabaster?

Yes. Every bell is natural white alabaster stone, not glass, resin or plastic. Its veining shows most clearly when the light is on.

Will every bell look the same?

Very close, but not identical. Because each shade is natural stone, the veining and tone vary slightly from bell to bell. In a cluster, that variation is part of its character, not a defect.

Black or gold?

Black chains and finials give a crisp, graphic outline that suits modern farmhouse, Japandi and old-world rooms. Gold feels warmer and more polished, ideal for French country and modern classic interiors.

Choosing a size

How many lights should I choose?

One or two bells suit compact spaces such as a sink, an entry or a small island. Three bells are the classic choice over a dining table or kitchen island. Five or seven bells fill longer tables and stairwells, while nine, eleven and thirteen bells are made for double-height rooms, restaurants and grand entrances.

How big is each shade?

Every bell measures Ø 13 cm × H 21 cm (Ø 5.1″ × H 8.3″), in every configuration.

How long is the chain, and can I shorten it?

Each bell comes with up to 150 cm (59.1″) of chain. The chain is made of individual links, so you can shorten each bell by removing links, one bell at a time, without affecting the others.

How far apart can I hang the bells?

Every bell has its own ceiling canopy, so the spacing is up to you. Around 30 cm (12″) apart creates a close cluster; around 90 cm (3 ft) apart spreads the light along a kitchen island. Plan the canopy positions with your electrician before installation.

Should the bells hang at different heights?

That is your choice. Staggering each bell about 10–20 cm (4–8″) from its neighbour gives a gentle cascade; hanging them at one level gives a calm line above a table.

What is the difference between the two 1-light versions?

One hangs straight down from a single canopy. The other adds a second canopy with a draped chain swag between them, for a softer, more decorative line.

The light

Which bulb does the Carillon use?

Each bell takes an E12 or E14 bulb, up to 40 W. E12 (candelabra) is standard in the US, Canada and Mexico; E14 is standard in the UK, Europe, Australia and much of Asia. A warm white LED bulb (2700–3000K) gives the softest glow through the alabaster.

Is it dimmable?

No. The Carillon is on/off only and is not dimmable. Its alabaster shades already soften the light into a warm, gentle glow.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

No. The Carillon is rated IP20 for indoor, dry rooms only. It suits kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, entryways and stairwells, but should not be installed in bathrooms or other damp areas.

Ordering and installing

Will it work with the voltage in my country?

Yes. The Carillon runs on AC 110–240 V, which covers the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and most other countries.

How do I install it?

The Carillon is a ceiling pendant. For safety, and especially for multi-light clusters, we recommend installation by a qualified electrician.

How soon will my order ship?

Each light is prepared at our factory in 5–10 days, then dispatched to you. You will see the delivery estimate for your country at checkout.

The alabaster edit

The Vidir lighting edit

The only shade that glows from inside.

Most shades block light and let it out at the edges. Yet, this stone-textured lampshade manages to achieve exactly that.

01

Translucent properties

Alabaster is translucent. Switch it on and the whole shade lights up from within, veining and all, instead of glowing only where the bulb sits. There is no bright spot to look at, because the light source is the entire surface.

02

Naturally formed

The veining was decided underground, long before anyone cut it. Every shade carries its own pattern and its own faint colour shift — so the piece that arrives is not the piece in the photograph, and that is the point.

03

Durable and long-lasting

Resin and acrylic imitations go amber and brittle within a few years of sitting next to a warm bulb. Stone does not age that way. The shade you unpack is the shade you will have in twenty years.

Designed for better living

Stone Light Fixtures

Natural stone is different from metal or glass. Understanding these points before you buy ensures there won't be any surprises after installation.
01

Light Color Defines the Look

Use warm white (2700K). The stone itself has an off-white, creamy tone; cool light passing through it makes it look grayish and dingy, whereas warm light brings out that honey-like hue seen in the photos.

02

Clean Only with a Dry Cloth

Alabaster is a natural stone that absorbs water and cleaning agents, which can leave permanent stains. Disconnect the power, let the bulb cool down, and then wipe the fixture with a soft, dry cloth—do not use water or spray cleaners.

03

It is heavier than it looks.

The density of the stone is far greater than that of a glass shade of the same size; ensure the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is sufficient for safety.

Limitations of resin

Resin is cast in moulds, so the "veining" repeats from one shade to the next and the light passes through evenly with no depth to it. It also ages differently: sitting close to a warm bulb, resin tends to amber and grow brittle within a few years.
