The story
Named after the stones that mark the way
On mountain paths from the Scottish Highlands to the Himalayas, travellers stack stones one on top of another. These cairns mark the trail, so whoever comes next knows they are on the right path. Each one is simple, balanced and a little different from the last.
The Cairn alabaster floor lamp is a cairn that glows. Natural alabaster, carved into spheres, columns and softly rounded drums, is stacked into a single upright column, separated by slim metal rings and set on a round black marble base.
Switch it on and the whole column lights from within, top to bottom, with soft, cloud-like veining. By day it reads as a stone sculpture; by night, as a warm totem of light in the corner of a living room, beside a sofa or a bed, or at the end of a hallway. It suits modern organic, Japandi, wabi-sabi, Mediterranean and contemporary interiors.

Is it real alabaster?
Yes. Every piece of the column is natural white alabaster, not resin or glass, and the base is black marble.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Very close, but not identical. Each piece is natural stone, so veining and tone vary slightly. That variation is part of its character, not a defect.
Size
Which height should I choose?
160 cm (63″) suits standard ceilings beside a sofa, bed or reading chair. 190 cm (74.8″) makes a statement in open-plan rooms, entryways and rooms with higher ceilings.
How much floor space does it need?
Both heights stand on a Ø 30 cm (11.8″) round base, so a small corner is enough.

A warm 3000K glow from a built-in LED, softened by the stone. It is ambient, atmospheric light rather than a focused reading light.
Do I need to buy bulbs?
No. The LED is built in, so there are no bulbs to buy or replace.
How do I turn it on?
With your foot. A foot switch lies on the floor along the power cord: step once for on, once for off.
Does it need an electrician?
No. The Cairn plugs into a standard wall socket, so there is nothing to wire or install.

Translucent properties
Alabaster is translucent. Switch it on and the whole shade lights up from within, veining and all, instead of glowing only where the bulb sits. There is no bright spot to look at, because the light source is the entire surface.

Naturally formed
The veining was decided underground, long before anyone cut it. Every shade carries its own pattern and its own faint colour shift — so the piece that arrives is not the piece in the photograph, and that is the point.

Durable and long-lasting
Resin and acrylic imitations go amber and brittle within a few years of sitting next to a warm bulb. Stone does not age that way. The shade you unpack is the shade you will have in twenty years.

Light Color Defines the Look
Use warm white (2700K). The stone itself has an off-white, creamy tone; cool light passing through it makes it look grayish and dingy, whereas warm light brings out that honey-like hue seen in the photos.

Clean Only with a Dry Cloth
Alabaster is a natural stone that absorbs water and cleaning agents, which can leave permanent stains. Disconnect the power, let the bulb cool down, and then wipe the fixture with a soft, dry cloth—do not use water or spray cleaners.

It is heavier than it looks.
The density of the stone is far greater than that of a glass shade of the same size; ensure the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is sufficient for safety.

Industrially Replicated Surface
Limitations of resin
Resin is cast in moulds, so the "veining" repeats from one shade to the next and the light passes through evenly with no depth to it. It also ages differently: sitting close to a warm bulb, resin tends to amber and grow brittle within a few years.
