The story

Pennello, two brushes dipped in light

In a painter’s studio, brushes hang side by side on the wall, their bristles full, their tips still wet.

Pennello, the Italian word for paintbrush, borrows that quiet scene, only these brushes are dipped in light. A single bent brass tube curves down from a round wall plate and splits into two slender arms. Each arm is wrapped in a full, tapering bundle of real horsehair in beige, brown or black, like the head of a brush, then sleeved in brass and finished with a tip of natural white alabaster. Switch it on and only the stone glows, warm and soft, as if each brush had just touched the light.

Hang a pair either side of a bed, a mirror or a console, in a hallway or a reading corner. It suits wabi-sabi, Japandi, modern organic, quiet-luxury and gallery-style interiors, where lighting doubles as art.

The materials

Is the horsehair real?

Yes. The bundles are real horsehair, wrapped by hand, so the strands vary slightly in tone and texture from sconce to sconce.

Is the alabaster real?

Yes. The tips are natural white alabaster, not resin or glass, so their veining is unique and shows most clearly when the light is on.

Which horsehair colour should I choose?

Beige is light and natural, lovely with oak and linen; brown is warm and rich, beautiful with walnut and leather; black is graphic and dramatic on pale walls. Each can be paired with a gold or black frame.

How do I care for the horsehair?

Brush it gently from top to bottom with a soft, dry brush from time to time. Keep it away from water, steam and direct heat, and do not use sprays or cleaning products.

Light and placement

Which part lights up?

Only the alabaster tips. Two G9 lights glow through the stone, soft and warm, while the brass and horsehair stay as a sculptural accent.

Which bulbs should I use?

Two G9 bulbs, up to 40 W in total. Warm white LED G9 bulbs of 2700–3000K give the softest glow and stay cool, which also protects the horsehair.

Should I buy one or a pair?

A pair either side of a bed or mirror gives the most balanced, gallery-like look, and choosing the size marked (*2) gets you two at a better price.

Is it dimmable?

The standard Pennello is on/off only. A dimmable version is available on request: please contact us before ordering.

Installation and ordering

How is it installed?

It is an indoor wall light. For safety, we recommend installation by a qualified electrician, following local electrical codes.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 for indoor, dry rooms only, and steam would damage the horsehair.

Most shades block light and let it out at the edges. Yet, this stone-textured lampshade manages to achieve exactly that.

Translucent properties

Alabaster is translucent. Switch it on and the whole shade lights up from within, veining and all, instead of glowing only where the bulb sits. There is no bright spot to look at, because the light source is the entire surface.

Naturally formed

The veining was decided underground, long before anyone cut it. Every shade carries its own pattern and its own faint colour shift — so the piece that arrives is not the piece in the photograph, and that is the point.

Durable and long-lasting

Resin and acrylic imitations go amber and brittle within a few years of sitting next to a warm bulb. Stone does not age that way. The shade you unpack is the shade you will have in twenty years.

Light Color Defines the Look

Use warm white (2700K). The stone itself has an off-white, creamy tone; cool light passing through it makes it look grayish and dingy, whereas warm light brings out that honey-like hue seen in the photos.

Clean Only with a Dry Cloth

Alabaster is a natural stone that absorbs water and cleaning agents, which can leave permanent stains. Disconnect the power, let the bulb cool down, and then wipe the fixture with a soft, dry cloth—do not use water or spray cleaners.

It is heavier than it looks.

The density of the stone is far greater than that of a glass shade of the same size; ensure the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is sufficient for safety.

Alabaster is translucent, so the light travels through the stone rather than escaping at the edges — the whole shade glows, veining and all. Every piece carries a pattern that was decided underground, which is why no two are alike.

Limitations of resin

Resin is cast in moulds, so the "veining" repeats from one shade to the next and the light passes through evenly with no depth to it. It also ages differently: sitting close to a warm bulb, resin tends to amber and grow brittle within a few years.

You can feel its weight when you hold it in your hand; it doesn't feel light and flimsy like plastic. The edges are finished perfectly smooth, with no rough spots or burrs.

Looks beautiful, arrived with faulty LED driver

Looks beautiful, but arrived with a faulty LED driver and burnt out the LED string light. Basically broke within minutes of it being wired in. Luckily I found a local lighting company who had a similar LED driver and was able to replace the LED lights. It’s a very custom lighting system that you can not easily replace. Buyer beware of that.

Exceptional visual quality.

Honestly, the final look completely won me over! Each hook is designed in a reasonable way, so that the glass tubes hang naturally in a staggered manner, without the rigid feel of an industrial mold. I am very satisfied with this light fixture.

Perfect as an ambient light for the bedroom.

I ditched my table lamps and installed these on either side of the bed for reading and ambiance. Not only did it free up space on my nightstands, but it also gives the entire room a clean, sophisticated, and high-end look. The lighting was just right, soft and gentle. I love it!

The details are exquisite, even the hooks are well made.

The craftsmanship is clearly precise. There is no glaring direct light after turning on the lights; instead, there is only soft, diffused light, making it perfect for curling up on the sofa at night to watch movies or read books.
