The story

Corda, stone bowls held by rope

In old Mediterranean harbours, fishermen hung bowls and lanterns from the eaves with thick, knotted rope: simple, sturdy and beautiful.

Corda, the Italian word for rope, brings that hand-tied charm indoors, in stone and brass. Shallow bowls of natural alabaster rest in loops of twisted, rope-like metal, suspended from slender rods. Switch it on and every bowl glows from within with a warm 3000K light, revealing soft, cloud-like veining, while the twisted brass draws gentle curves around the stone.

Choose a single pendant for a kitchen island, bedside or entryway, or a ring of bowls as the centrepiece of a dining room or entrance hall. In gold, black or nickel, the Corda suits Mediterranean, modern organic, French country, rustic luxe and Japandi interiors.

Before you order

The stone and the rope

Are the bowls real alabaster?

Yes. Every bowl is carved from natural white alabaster, not resin or glass. Its veining shows most clearly when the light is on, and varies from piece to piece.

Is the rope real rope?

No. The rope-like detail is twisted metal, finished in gold, black or nickel to match the frame. It has the look of hand-tied rope with the strength and durability of metal.

Which finish should I choose?

Gold is warm and classic, lovely with cream walls and wood. Black gives a crisp, graphic outline. Nickel is cool and understated for modern spaces.

Size and placement

Which size suits my dining table?

For a ring, choose a diameter about 30 cm (12″) narrower than your table: the 101.6 cm and 100.3 cm rings suit tables of about 130 cm (52″) wide or more. The single pendant suits a kitchen island, bedside or small table.

How high should it hang?

Over a table, keep the bowls about 75–90 cm (30–36″) above the tabletop. Where people walk underneath, allow at least 2.1 m (7 ft) of clearance below the lowest bowl.

Can the rods be made longer or shorter?

Yes. We can make the rods to a custom length so the bowls hang at the right height. Please contact us with your ceiling height before ordering.

Can it be installed on a sloped ceiling?

Yes. We can make a custom canopy for pitched or vaulted ceilings so the light hangs straight. Send us the slope angle and a photo of the space before ordering.

Light and installation

What kind of light does it give?

A warm white 3000K glow from a built-in LED, softened by the stone. There are no bulbs to buy or replace.

Is it dimmable?

The standard Corda is on/off only. A dimmable version is available on request: please contact us before ordering.

How is it installed?

It is a hardwired ceiling light. Natural stone is heavy, so we recommend installation by a qualified electrician on a ceiling box rated for the weight, following local electrical codes.

How do I clean it?

Switch off, then dust the bowls and frame with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and chemical cleaners, as alabaster is a porous natural stone.

How soon will my order ship?

Most shades block light and let it out at the edges. Yet, this stone-textured lampshade manages to achieve exactly that.

Translucent properties

Alabaster is translucent. Switch it on and the whole shade lights up from within, veining and all, instead of glowing only where the bulb sits. There is no bright spot to look at, because the light source is the entire surface.

Naturally formed

The veining was decided underground, long before anyone cut it. Every shade carries its own pattern and its own faint colour shift — so the piece that arrives is not the piece in the photograph, and that is the point.

Durable and long-lasting

Resin and acrylic imitations go amber and brittle within a few years of sitting next to a warm bulb. Stone does not age that way. The shade you unpack is the shade you will have in twenty years.

Light Color Defines the Look

Use warm white (2700K). The stone itself has an off-white, creamy tone; cool light passing through it makes it look grayish and dingy, whereas warm light brings out that honey-like hue seen in the photos.

Clean Only with a Dry Cloth

Alabaster is a natural stone that absorbs water and cleaning agents, which can leave permanent stains. Disconnect the power, let the bulb cool down, and then wipe the fixture with a soft, dry cloth—do not use water or spray cleaners.

It is heavier than it looks.

The density of the stone is far greater than that of a glass shade of the same size; ensure the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is sufficient for safety.

Industrially Replicated Surface

Limitations of resin

Resin is cast in moulds, so the "veining" repeats from one shade to the next and the light passes through evenly with no depth to it. It also ages differently: sitting close to a warm bulb, resin tends to amber and grow brittle within a few years.

Looks beautiful, arrived with faulty LED driver

Looks beautiful, but arrived with a faulty LED driver and burnt out the LED string light. Basically broke within minutes of it being wired in. Luckily I found a local lighting company who had a similar LED driver and was able to replace the LED lights. It’s a very custom lighting system that you can not easily replace. Buyer beware of that.

Exceptional visual quality.

Honestly, the final look completely won me over! Each hook is designed in a reasonable way, so that the glass tubes hang naturally in a staggered manner, without the rigid feel of an industrial mold. I am very satisfied with this light fixture.

I ditched my table lamps and installed these on either side of the bed for reading and ambiance. Not only did it free up space on my nightstands, but it also gives the entire room a clean, sophisticated, and high-end look. The lighting was just right, soft and gentle. I love it!
