The Art of Handmade Paper Why this lantern is real mulberry paper, not plasticA floating sculpture of warm, glowing handmade paper above your table, bedside, or reading corner:

Handmade paper texture · Soft glare-free glow · Sculptural & light
Read the Story⌄
01

Shaped from Real Handmade Paper

Every shade is one of a kind

This mulberry paper lantern pendant light is hand-shaped from natural mulberry paper (washi) — a handmade paper prized for centuries for its strength, warmth, and translucency. Each sheet carries its own delicate fibers and subtle texture, so no two shades are ever exactly alike. Stretched over a slender ribbed frame, it becomes a handcrafted paper pendant with a soft, organic character that machine-made plastic or printed film simply cannot imitate.

02

A Light That Softens the Room

Warm, even, glare-free

What makes handmade paper so captivating is the way it glows. As light passes through the natural fibers, it scatters into a soft, warm, glare-free wash that hides the bulb completely. In an instant a dining room, bedroom, or reading corner settles into a calm, inviting atmosphere — the serene, ambient quality of a washi paper lamp that designers turn to for Japandi and wabi-sabi interiors.

03

Sculpture That Floats

Airy, lightweight, architectural

The ribbed lantern silhouette reads as a piece of floating paper sculpture — a quiet, architectural focal point that fills a space without visual heaviness. Available in multiple sizes, this sculptural paper lantern scales from an intimate bedside accent to a bold statement over a dining table or stairwell, bringing an airy, gallery-like calm to modern, minimalist, and Scandinavian rooms.

04

The Calm of Natural Materials

Organic warmth, timeless character

There's a reason natural, handmade materials never go out of style: they bring a warmth and honesty that synthetics can't fake. Unlike a plastic or PVC shade that looks flat and lifeless, natural mulberry paper carries genuine depth, texture, and a soft glow that feels alive. This Japanese-style paper lantern light brings the grounding, organic calm of natural fiber into your home — a timeless piece that quietly elevates the whole room.

Why Natural Mulberry Paper, Not Plastic

A side-by-side comparison of materials

Light & Glow Natural fibers scatter light into a soft, warm, layered glow Flat, even transparency—light passes through without warmth or depth
Character A natural material that never looks cheap; ages with gentle, honest character Can yellow, warp, or release odor when heated by the bulb

Size Selection & Hanging Height Guide

Find Your Perfect Paper Globe

Washi Paper Globe Pendant Light

Larger paper globes make a stronger visual statement and usually work best in rooms with higher ceilings. Use your room height and furniture scale as a guide — then choose the size you love most. Each shade is hand-shaped from natural mulberry paper (washi) for a soft, warm, glare-free glow.

Keep at least 16 in of exposed cord above the shade for a balanced look.

When estimating hang length, add about half the shade height to the visible cord length.

Some wire length is lost during install, so leave a little extra slack.

Six sizes, to scale — against a ceiling-height reference

The number is the globe diameter (cm). Dashed lines mark ceiling height; larger globes need taller ceilings.

5'7" 28″ dining table

For dining tables

Hang the globe about 28–30″ above the tabletop, and keep the shade narrower than the table's smallest width.

For round tables

A globe around half the table diameter often feels balanced — e.g. a 20″ fixture over a 39″ table. In lower-ceiling rooms, choose size by ceiling height first.

55 cm∅ 21.7″ Bedroom, kitchen island, small dining Balanced presence without overwhelming the room
60 cm∅ 23.6″ Dining table, kitchen island, living room The popular all-rounder — a confident centerpiece
70 cm∅ 27.5″ Dining room, living room, open-plan space Statement scale for rooms with standard-to-high ceilings
75 cm∅ 29.5″ Large dining, living room, foyer Bold focal point; best with a min. ceiling around 73″
80 cm∅ 31.5″ Open-plan living, high-ceiling dining Dramatic sculpture; suits taller, open rooms
90 cm∅ 35.4″ Stairwell, double-height foyer, atrium Grand scale for tall vertical spaces
100 cm∅ 39.4″ Two-story foyer, stairwell, large lobby Show-stopping; best with a min. ceiling around 87″
120 cm∅ 47.2″ Grand foyer, atrium, hospitality space Maximum impact; best with a min. ceiling around 110″

As a rule of thumb: the larger the globe, the taller the ceiling it needs. When in doubt, choose by ceiling height first, then by the look you love.

Questions, Answered

Paper Globe Pendant FAQ

What is the shade made of?
Each globe is hand-shaped from genuine natural mulberry paper (washi) over a slender frame. The subtle fibers and warm tone are unique to every piece — real handmade paper, never plastic or printed film.
Which size should I choose?
It comes in eleven diameters, from 30 cm (∅11.8″) to 120 cm (∅47.2″). As a guide: smaller sizes (30–50 cm) suit a bedside, nook, or hallway; mid sizes (55–70 cm) are ideal over a dining table or island; and larger sizes (75–120 cm) make a bold statement in a living room, foyer, or stairwell. The bigger the globe, the taller the ceiling it needs — see the size chart above.
How high should I hang it?
Over a dining table, keep the bottom of the shade about 28–30″ above the tabletop. Over open floor or a walkway, keep it at least 7 ft above the floor. Leave at least 16″ of exposed cord above the shade for a balanced look. The drop length is adjustable.
What size globe suits my dining table?
Keep the shade narrower than the table's smallest width. For a round table, a globe around half the table diameter often feels balanced — for example, a 50 cm (∅19.7″) globe over a 39″ table. In lower-ceiling rooms, choose the size by ceiling height first.
What bulb and light color should I use?
For the soft, warm glow shown, we recommend a 2700–3000K warm-white LED bulb. A warm bulb brings out the natural fibers of the paper, and LED runs cool, which is gentle on the shade.
What interiors does it suit?
Its organic, handmade character makes it perfect for Japandi, wabi-sabi, Scandinavian, minimalist, and modern interiors — beautiful over a dining table, in a bedroom, living room, entryway, or stairwell.
Is it hard to install — do I need an electrician?
It's a hardwired ceiling pendant mounted to a standard junction box. A confident DIYer with wiring experience can manage it, but if you're not comfortable with wiring, any electrician can fit it quickly. Always cut power at the breaker first, and handle the paper shade by its frame.
How do I clean a paper globe light?
Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or cloth, and keep it away from moisture. Handle the mulberry paper shade with care, as it's a natural handmade material — avoid water and harsh chemicals.

Pairs Well With

Sculptural paper floor, table and pendant lamps glowing softly in a gallery-style room.

Light, Softened by Paper

Sculptural floor, table and pendant lamps that turn warm light into a soft, even glow. Their organic shapes bring a calm, gallery-like presence to modern rooms.

Shaped from Paper and Light

Each shade stretches a light paper skin over a fine iron wire frame. The result is a lamp that feels almost weightless, lets light pass through and blends it into a warm, even glow, and folds away when you need it to.

  • An artisan shaping a large circular paper lampshade over a spiral wire frame.

    High Translucency, Blended Light

The thin paper lets plenty of light pass through, then blends it into one soft, even glow without harsh glare.

  • Close-up of a collapsible paper lampshade showing its folding rib structure.

    Folds Flat, Opens Easily

The ribbed structure collapses flat for compact shipping and storage, then opens back into its full shape when you are ready to hang it.

  • Gluing a paper panel along the seam of a lampshade during assembly.

    Clean, Careful Seams

Paper panels are glued along the ribs and pressed into neat seams, keeping the surface smooth so light passes through evenly.

Mix Shapes, Build Your Own Cluster

Choose shades in different shapes and sizes, then hang them together as one grouped installation. Setting each shade at its own height creates a layered, sculptural look that draws the eye upward.

A cluster shines above a dining table, in a stairwell with a tall ceiling, or as the centerpiece of a living room, anywhere a single pendant would feel too small.

  2. Tell us about your space

From Plant Fiber to Glowing Paper

Traditional papermaking is a slow, patient craft. Plant fibers are softened, beaten, formed and dried into thin sheets, and every stage shapes how the finished paper will hold and soften light.

  1. Preparing the bark

Bundles of plant bark are soaked and stripped, leaving only the inner fibers used for paper.

  2. Cooking the fibers

The fibers simmer in a large cauldron until they turn soft and pliable.

  3. Pounding the pulp

Softened fibers are pounded in a stone mortar to break them into fine strands.

  4. Mixing the vat

The pulp is stirred into a vat of water until the fibers float evenly throughout.

  5. Forming the sheet

A screen is lifted through the vat, catching a thin, even layer of fibers as the water drains away.

  6. Pressing out water

Stacks of wet sheets go into a wooden press to squeeze out the remaining water.

  7. Smoothing flat

Each sheet is laid on a board and smoothed so it dries even and free of wrinkles.

  8. Checking the finish

Finished sheets are held to the light to check for an even texture before they are rolled and stored.

Why it matters for light

Long fibers that overlap in every direction give the paper strength while keeping it thin. When a bulb shines through, those layers scatter the light into a warm, even glow with no harsh hot spots.

Shaped by Hand, Shade by Shade

Every paper shade takes shape at the workbench. Our artisans build the frame, lay the paper and finish each seam by hand, giving every lamp a quiet, crafted character that machines cannot copy.

  • Setting thin ribs around a metal mold to build a lampshade frame.

    Frames Built by Hand

Each rib is bent and set around the mold by hand, one at a time, so the frame takes on a smooth, balanced curve.

  • An artisan pasting paper panels onto a lampshade frame mold.

    Paper Laid Piece by Piece

Artisans position every paper panel by hand, lining it up with the ribs before gently pressing it into place.

  • Smoothing paper over the curved ribs of a lampshade by hand.

    Pressed and Smoothed by Hand

Fingertips follow each curved rib, pressing the paper flat and easing out the small wrinkles a machine would miss.

  • Trimming excess paper along a lampshade seam with precision.

    Trimmed with Care

Every seam is trimmed by hand with scissors, leaving a clean edge and a shade that glows evenly from top to bottom.

Why handmade matters

Hands can feel what a machine cannot: where the paper needs easing, and where a seam needs one more pass.

Shaped by hand

Every frame is covered and smoothed at the workbench.

Finished seam by seam

Edges are trimmed individually for a clean line.

One of a kind

Small variations in texture and seams are part of each shade.

See the Craft in Motion

Watch how our paper lamps come together at the workbench. From the first rib on the frame to the final trimmed seam, every stage is guided by hand before the shade reaches your home.

  • Frames built by hand

Ribs are set one at a time for a smooth, balanced shape.

  • Paper smoothed by hand

Each panel is pressed along the ribs to follow every curve.

  • Seams trimmed with care

Clean edges help the finished shade glow evenly.
