The story

Ombrellino, a little parasol of stone

In old Italian gardens, a small parasol often stood beside a stone table, casting a pool of soft shade on a summer afternoon.

Ombrellino, the Italian word for a little parasol, brings that gentle, sheltering feeling indoors. A wide, half-dome shade of natural white alabaster rests above two turned stems, each shaped with bead-and-reel details like the legs of antique furniture, rising from a round wall plate in a warm gold finish. Switch it on and two hidden lights make the stone glow from within, revealing soft, cloud-like veining, while the light falls gently down the stems and across the wall.

The two G9 lights sit hidden inside the stone, so you see a soft glow, never a bare bulb. Hang a pair either side of a bed, a mirror or a fireplace, along a hallway or above a console. It suits traditional, French country, Mediterranean, modern classic and eclectic interiors, and pairs beautifully with plaster walls, walnut and linen.

The stone and the light

Is the shade real alabaster?

Yes. The dome is natural white alabaster, not resin or glass, so its veining is unique to every sconce and shows most clearly when the light is on.

Where does the light go?

Two G9 lights sit inside the dome. The stone glows softly, and the light falls down the stems and across the wall, so it never shines straight into your eyes.

Which bulbs should I use?

Two G9 bulbs, up to 40 W in total. Warm white LED G9 bulbs of 2700–3000K give the softest glow through the stone and stay cool to the touch.

Can I choose the veining?

Yes. We can select alabaster with a particular look, from creamy and plain to bold, cloud-like veining. Please contact us before ordering.

Is it dimmable?

The standard Ombrellino is on/off only. A dimmable version is available on request: please contact us before ordering.

How big is it?

W 31 cm × H 37 cm (W 12.2″ × H 14.6″): generous enough to make a statement, compact enough for a hallway or bedside.

Should I buy one or a pair?

A pair either side of a bed, mirror or fireplace gives the most balanced look, and choosing the size marked (*2) gets you two at a better price. A single sconce makes a lovely accent above a console.

How is it installed?

It is an indoor wall light. For safety, we recommend installation by a qualified electrician, following local electrical codes.

How do I clean it?

Switch off and let the bulbs cool, then dust the stone and stems with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and chemical cleaners, as alabaster is a porous natural stone.

Most shades block light and let it out at the edges. Yet, this stone-textured lampshade manages to achieve exactly that.

Translucent properties

Alabaster is translucent. Switch it on and the whole shade lights up from within, veining and all, instead of glowing only where the bulb sits. There is no bright spot to look at, because the light source is the entire surface.

Naturally formed

The veining was decided underground, long before anyone cut it. Every shade carries its own pattern and its own faint colour shift — so the piece that arrives is not the piece in the photograph, and that is the point.

Durable and long-lasting

Resin and acrylic imitations go amber and brittle within a few years of sitting next to a warm bulb. Stone does not age that way. The shade you unpack is the shade you will have in twenty years.

Light Color Defines the Look

Use warm white (2700K). The stone itself has an off-white, creamy tone; cool light passing through it makes it look grayish and dingy, whereas warm light brings out that honey-like hue seen in the photos.

Clean Only with a Dry Cloth

Alabaster is a natural stone that absorbs water and cleaning agents, which can leave permanent stains. Disconnect the power, let the bulb cool down, and then wipe the fixture with a soft, dry cloth—do not use water or spray cleaners.

It is heavier than it looks.

The density of the stone is far greater than that of a glass shade of the same size; ensure the ceiling's load-bearing capacity is sufficient for safety.

Alabaster is translucent, so the light travels through the stone rather than escaping at the edges — the whole shade glows, veining and all. Every piece carries a pattern that was decided underground, which is why no two are alike.

Limitations of resin

Resin is cast in moulds, so the "veining" repeats from one shade to the next and the light passes through evenly with no depth to it. It also ages differently: sitting close to a warm bulb, resin tends to amber and grow brittle within a few years.

You can feel its weight when you hold it in your hand; it doesn't feel light and flimsy like plastic. The edges are finished perfectly smooth, with no rough spots or burrs.

Looks beautiful, arrived with faulty LED driver

Looks beautiful, but arrived with a faulty LED driver and burnt out the LED string light. Basically broke within minutes of it being wired in. Luckily I found a local lighting company who had a similar LED driver and was able to replace the LED lights. It’s a very custom lighting system that you can not easily replace. Buyer beware of that.

Exceptional visual quality.

Honestly, the final look completely won me over! Each hook is designed in a reasonable way, so that the glass tubes hang naturally in a staggered manner, without the rigid feel of an industrial mold. I am very satisfied with this light fixture.

I ditched my table lamps and installed these on either side of the bed for reading and ambiance. Not only did it free up space on my nightstands, but it also gives the entire room a clean, sophisticated, and high-end look. The lighting was just right, soft and gentle. I love it!
