A shade open at the top throws as much light onto your ceiling as into your room, which is why so many pendants leave a bright disc overhead that nobody asked for. Here the metal closes it off, so light leaves only downward and sideways through the stone — a defined pool on the surface below, and a warm glow around the drum itself.
